Field Herping 2014
The 2014 herping season started off a little late due to a crazy winter, but it turned out to be a very good season.
March 23, 2014 A baby Texas rat snake found under a
mattress on a cold spring day. The air temperature was
about 51 degrees.
April 10, 2014 A blotched water snake found shortly after
dark. They are commonly mistaken for cottonmouths (aka
water moccasins)..
April 13, 2014 A swarm of honey bees in a tree. I would
not want to make them angry!
April 12, 2014 A Great Plains rat snake (aka Emory's rat
snake. Much calmer than Texas rat snakes.
April 13, 2014 A nice looking adult broadbanded
copperhead found under an old recliner.
April 13, 2014 A juvenile broadbanded copperhead found
under a small board. Amazing camoflage!
April 18, 2014 A baby broadbanded copperhead found in
a pile of trash. Notice the yellow tip to the tail.
April 18, 2014 A Texas rat snake as found curled up
under a board in a rodent nest.
April 19, 2014 The first of three Texas coral snakes
found in one day, all under boards. This was a small
juvenile.
April 19, 2014 A western diamondback rattlesnake
found crawling along the side of the road. This one was
3 to 3 1/2 feet long.
April 19, 2014 Texas coral snake #2, a small adult
about two feet long.
April 19, 2014 Texas coral snake #3, which appears to
be a possibly gravid (pregnant) female.
April 24, 2014 A young western diamondback
rattlesnake I saw crossing a country road shortly after
dark.
April 26, 2014 A ground snake found under a rock in
southern Oklahoma. These snakes vary in
appearance from banded, striped and patternless.
April 26, 2014 An adult speckled king snake found
crossing the road after dark in southern Oklahoma.
May 3, 2014 A Texas spiny lizard. Common lizards in
this area in forests which can grow to 11 inches.
May 4, 2013 An adult western massasauga rattlesnake
I saw crossing the road shortly after dark. This one was
pretty thick and healthy looking.
May 9, 2014 A Texas coral snake that we found
crawling along the trail a day after we got some storms
and heavy rain.
May 10, 2014 A juvenile western massasauga
rattlesnake that looked like it needed a meal.
May 10, 2014 A large and angry bull snake found
under a board on the side of the road.
May 11, 2014 An adult broadbanded copperhead, one
of many seen in the same night.
May 10, 2014 A Texas rat snake. This one was easily
over five feet in length.
May 11, 2014 An adult western pygmy rattlesnake
found crossing the road shortly after sunset.
May 11, 2014 My very first Texas night snake (aka
Chihuahuan night snake) that I found under a rock.
May 25, 2014 A juvenile western massasauga
rattlesnake found on the road during a heavy rain.
May 25, 2014 A juvenile Texas rat snake found in a
pile of roofing shingles.
May 23, 2014 A speckled/desert intergrade king
snake found under a board.
May 23, 2014 A baby copperhead I saw sitting on a
park trail shortly after sunset.
May 27, 2014 A Texas coral snake found under a
board after a rain. My fifth one this year.
May 26, 2014 Three red eared sliders on the left and
three river cooters on the right.
June 14, 2014 A male Texas brown tarantula out
looking for a mate.
June 8, 2014 A large adult speckled/desert king
snake intergrade found crossing a country road.
July 18, 2014 A very large Gulf Coast toad found
under some tiles.
July 18, 2014 A large, adult Texas rat snake found
under a piece of tin.
Here is the same copperhead. This one was a large
and nice looking adult.
July 18, 2014 A broadbanded copperhead found
hiding in a pile of old fencing.
August 2, 2014 A juvenile coachwhip that I found
under a board in Dallas County.
October 11, 2014 A black rat snake from Oklahoma,
found under a piece of tin.
October 25, 2014 A large male western
diamondback rattlesnake I found crawling along.
October 25, 2014 An adult Great Plains rat snake,
one of three found under  a pile of boards.
